Fort Reliance, established in 1874 on the upper Yukon River, was the first trading post built in the Yukon after the departure of the Hudson's:Bay:Company. Located six miles from the mouth of the Klondike River and just eight miles north of the future city of Dawson, it was the first post in what later became the gold country.
In August 1874 the Alaska Commercial Company sent Jack McQuesten upriver on the steamer Yukon to build the new post, near the Han village of Nuklako. McQuesten hired Han people to carry logs for the building, and to hunt and dry meat for the winter.
